Rider Rules and Safety

Each day’s ride on the Entoure Cycle Classics will begin at about 7:00 a.m., following a buffet breakfast served at the hotel on days 2 and 3.

Peloton Etiquette

Riders are to stay as a group for the duration of the event. In cycling, the ride group is called a peloton. It is important that all participants have experience in a peloton before riding with us.

Some basic peloton pointers:

  • Always stay alert and calm.
  • Ride smoothly and predictably, avoiding swerves, abrupt breaking and accelerations/surges. Be careful not to create a rubber band effect for the riders towards the back of the peloton.
  • Call all road hazards, turns, intersections, slowdowns etc. so those behind you who may not see what’s ahead know something is coming.
  • Clearly state your intentions, whether it be standing in the saddle, pulling out of line, dropping back or any other unexpected manoeuvre.
  • Stay in two rows, handlebar to handlebar. Do not block the road and do not let your front wheel overlap the rear wheel of the rider in front of you.
  • Do not under any circumstances cross to the wrong side of the road.

Roadside Meals

On the first and third days of riding, a lunch break at a roadside café will be organised. These breaks will be for approximately 30 minutes in duration, so riders should eat their food and hydrate without delay.

Additional snack and/or water stops will also be pre-set for about five minutes every two hours. Riders will be briefed about snack break plans, practices and safety considerations before and during the event.

All stops are organised in a way that doesn’t allow muscles to cool or bodies to stiffen. The prime objective on each day will be to keep rolling.

Support

Accompanying the peloton will be a road crew. Their responsibility will be to keep riders on course, safe from surrounding traffic and well supplied with water and energy drinks and food.

Bike support will be provided and mechanics will be on route at all times. However, riders are encouraged to visit a bike store and organise a pre-ride service of their bicycle to ensure road readiness. There is no point starting the event with a bike in need of repair. TIP: apply new tyres before you start the tour.

Helmet

A properly fitted helmet is required at all times while riding. No exceptions!

Insurance

Personal accident and public liability insurance is available to all riders as a function of their membership in Bicycle NSW (or other state equivalent). Each rider must be a member and record his/her number with Entoure prior to departure. Again, no exceptions! Anyone not yet a member of Bicycle NSW (or equivalent) are encouraged to register through the state-appropriate site:

Bicycle NSW (or equivalent) provides:

  1. $20m public liability insurance – in case a rider accidentally hits someone while riding
  2. personal accident insurance – includes loss of income cover
  3. Australian Cyclist Magazine subscription
  4. great discounts on cylcing books, various cycling events and more
