Meet Our Youngest Ever Competitor Aged 14 Years Young

How often do we hear the words:
- “I couldn’t do that”
- “I don’t have a bike”
- “I don’t have time”
- “I don’t have a corporate network to raise funds”.
Well meet our youngest ever competitor Joshua Williams (my nephew); aged just 14 years young.
Joshua has no bike, no network and no experience. But what he does have is a supporting father who is highly experienced in endurance cycle events (having won our coveted yellow winners jersey at our inaugural cycle tour in 2008) who has agreed to support Joshua in his efforts to become a cyclist over the next 6 weeks.
Joshua is a natural athlete and has already achieved plenty in his short life; but the challenge he has set for himself this time is big and a classic example of it can be done if you want it done.
Joshua has agreed to cycle day 2 of our 2010 hunter event; a 100 k loop around the hunter valley and raise funds for the Day of Difference in the process. His dad will be with him throughout his training ordeal and is very confident that Joshua will achieve what he has set out to do.
Joshua’s training will be a mix of spin bike in his fathers garage and on-road cycling about 2 weeks before the event during his school holidays. Joshua is in year 10 and like all of us will be time poor; nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how he applies himself to complete the cycle challenge and how he is able to raise funds.
It’s hard for me not to be biased (being Joshua’s uncle and all) but how good is this ? It is this type of effort that inspires me to do what I do. Our tours are about raising much needed funds for the Day of Difference Foundation; but they are also about providing people with an opportunity to shine; to achieve something for themselves and for others; and to engage their family and friends in the process. Joshua is the first teenager to put his hand up to have a crack; I hope his efforts inspire other teenagers to follow in his footsteps.
Congrats Josh and thanks for taking on the challenge and supporting critically injured kids. Train hard and let’s go and have some fun in the hunter.

This is inspiring. Go Josh. I have a son about the same age and he would love to do what your doing. Train well and listen to your father.
Fantastic Josh. A great effort and very inspiring. Good luck with your ride.
